Impact
Evaluation of School External Evaluation Programs
|
|
The aim of this research
project is to contribute to the development of meta-evaluation on
school external evaluation programs. We aim to evaluate the impact
of these programs on the organizational development of schools,
which are seen as learning organizations. Furthermore, we are also
interested in studying the synergies that can be established between
external and internal evaluation. This project was concluded in
2005.

Self-evaluation of
Schools
|
|
With
this project, in an Action Research perspective, we aim to study the
application of a variety of policies and self-evaluation devices in
schools. We believe that a large element in school evaluation will
be the development of self-evaluation skills in the actors involved
and other interested parties.

Quality XXI Project
- Educational Innovation Institute
|
|
This
project was one of the few concrete actions that aimed to contribute
to the development of self-evaluation devices in Portuguese schools.
This project had a national scope and aimed to foment and support
the organizational development of basic and secondary schools, and
in this way to contribute to significantly improve their quality.
The project included a reference framework and a group of
suggestions and tools that allowed for a flexible use, so schools
could develop a systemic process of self-regulation that would
include every aspect of their life and functioning, to allow for the
continuous improvement of the quality offered by the schools. I was
involved in this project in the role of “critical friend” of the Dr.
Jaime Magalhães Lima Secondary School (Escola Secundária Dr. Jaime
Magalhães Lima), in Esgueira, Aveiro, and of project instructor in
the Aveiro area.

Vocational
Education in Portugal and in Brasil
|
|
This
research project was conducted in collaboration with the Pontifical
Catholic University (Pontifícia Universidade Católica) of São Paulo,
Brazil. The research team of the University of Aveiro was
constituted by Luís Pardal, Alexandre Ventura, Manuel Ferreira
Rodrigues and Carlos Dias. The Brazilian research team was
coordinated by the Professors Maria Laura Puglisi Barbosa Franco and
Clarilza Prado de Sousa. This investigation was developed in two
phases. In the first phase, the aim was to contextualize the
different modalities of secondary and vocational education, in the
Portuguese and Brazilian realities, with a focus on their historical
trajectories and discussing their current status. In the second
phase, several case studies were conducted, in Portugal and in
Brazil, to further the information gathered and to verify the
dynamic of the teaching-learning process and the content of the
abilities developed in students through their professionalizing
training.
The
theme of Vocational Education had already been dealt with in my
Masters Thesis (1998) entitled Interactions between the Education System and the economic and social systems in Professional
Schools. A Case Study. Aveiro: University of
Aveiro (Interacções do Sistema Educativo com os sistemas
económico e social a nível das Escolas Profissionais. Um estudo de
caso).

Flexible Management
of Curriculum
|
|
In the
context of the protocol of cooperation between the University of
Aveiro and the Department of Basic Education (Departmento de
Educação Básica) of the Ministry of Education, integrated in the
process of development of the new national curricular framework that
aims for a “Flexible Management of the Curriculum” (“Gestão Flexível
do Currículo”), with a view to offer regular scientific support,
systematic observation, to participate in the reflection and debate
on the topic and to support the basic education schools involved (or
not) in its fulfilment, the research team of the project (Jorge
Adelino Costa, Alexandre Ventura, António Neto Mendes and Carlos
Dias) aims to develop activities in the following domains:
·
gathering of information,
systematic observation and educational research;
·
training, support and consulting to
basic education schools;
·
initial and continuous training of
teachers and educators;
·
cooperation in the process of
development of the curricular guidelines at a national level.

Management
of Pupils Indiscipline
|
|
This is
one of the research areas to which I have given more attention
lately, with the aim of studying the phenomenon of indiscipline in
schools, separating it from the phenomenon of violence, and trying
to analyse the multitude of possibilities teachers and personnel in
charge of school management have to adequately deal with this
phenomenon.

Xplika - The private tutoring market,
school effectiveness and students' performance |
|
With this project we intend to research and to
clarify the private tutoring situation in Portugal, namely through
data that shows, on one hand, the scale of the phenomenon and, on
the other hand, the connections between private tutoring and school
"effectiveness", the school failure/success of the students and the
level of equity of the students and of their families in what
concerns the access to education.

Bullying - Violence in schools |
|
Although Bullying is a social
phenomenon of the utmost relevance and with an extremely harmful impact
in several academic and social levels, not many studies have been
conducted about it in Portugal. The research project in which I’m
currently involved, aims to
clarify the contours of this problematic and to contribute to better
prepare the actors involved to deal with this situation in a more
harmonious, informed and efficient way. I'm writing a book on
bullying to be published in 2009.
